Although by no means Oscar Wilde’s most famous work, ‘An Ideal Husband’ is arguably the best of his four Society Comedies and is as relevant now, some might say more so, as it was in 1895 when it was first performed. It is a dramatic comedy written with all Wilde’s delicious wit.
Sir Robert Chiltern is a rising star of the British political scene, admired for his drive and incorruptible integrity, with a beautiful adoring wife and loyal friends. However, it is all about to be threatened by a dark secret from his past.
It is a story of integrity in public office, blackmail, and forgiveness. For Sir Robert there is the real possibility of being ostracized by society and spurned by those whom he loves.
