“Attention, Les Apaches!” Ravel Quartet, Debussy, De Falla and more…

Join the Harborough Collective, directed by international violinist David Le Page, for this musical journey into the creative Parisian artistic underworld of the turn of the century.

The revolutionary artists movement ‘Les Apaches’ was formed by Maurice Ravel and pianist Ricardo Viñes in 1903 – the same year the 28 year old composer completed his epic string quartet. Amused when an intended insult “Attention, Les Apaches!” (“Watch out, Hooligans!”) was shouted at the rowdy group of friends by a frightened newspaper boy as they left the premiere of Debussy’s new opera, they decided to appropriate the name for themselves. This groundbreaking collective of artists, musicians and writers met weekly in a studio in Montmartre, Paris, to share idea, and try out new works. Centred around Ravel’s mesmerising String Quartet this concert explores the richly evocative underworld of ‘Les Apaches’, inhabited by Ravel’s closest artist friends Manuel De Falla, Stravinsky, Satie and Debussy, as well as his teacher Gabriel Fauré, to whom Ravel dedicated his quartet.
