For our first series of 2025, we’ll be exploring theatre, literature and music – looking behind the scenes, between the covers and into the sound.
Wednesday 29th January 2025 – Page to Stage
The volunteers at Market Harborough Drama Society stage seven full length plays in their auditorium each year and also produce plays in their lounge area. They’ll give a glimpse behind the scenes and explain the different stages a play goes through – from the decision to perform it, through to how the creative teams work together to bring the performance to the stage.
Wednesday 26th February 2025 – First Editions
Les Ashton of Ashton Rare Books explores the world of Modern First Edition books, explaining what makes a book a ‘highlight’. He will emphasise the importance of dust jackets, signatures, associations, fashion, and scarcity in making a title and a particular copy special.
Over the last decade, Les has specialised in collecting and selling fine copies of rare books, particularly modern first editions, modern illustrated books and classic children’s fiction; this evening offers a great chance to learn more about 20th century first editions from a local expert.
Wednesday 26th March 2025 – From Thomas Edison to Queen and AI
How did we get from Edison’s first experiments with sound in the 1870’s to multi-track recordings such as Bohemian Rhapsody and the newest AI-generated music? Ron Counte joins us to show how recording engineers create the songs we love to hear, with fascinating analysis of tracks by Marvin Gaye, The Beatles, Queen and others.
